Which came first: The chicken or the egg?

Ok, so I was making omelets the other day and I cracked the first egg, and everything was normal. I cracked the second egg, and there was this:

I was instantly sick to my stomach. The two little ones on top are the yolks that came from the second egg. I am not a vegetarian, and I do not think I ever could be. My husband loves meat, if there was a meal with no meat on the table I'm not sure what he would do. However, our New Years resolution this year has been to not eat any red meat. We have only consumed turkey and chicken so far this year. I'm surprised my husband has stuck to it this long, but I hope we can because it's better for us to not eat red meat, I was never big on red meat so this is an easy resolution for me :)

Now back to the picture.... I was so upset I called my mother almost in tears. Taking about chicken babies, and twins, and two yolks coming out of one egg. I think it was the first time I ever thought about an egg seriously. I mean I have cooked and baked a lot for some one my age, and I have never come across this before.

From now on I will never crack an egg without being able to think of where it actually came from. Now will this stop me from using eggs? No. But it did teach me to not take them for granted anymore.

Also I guess this is really a normal thing. My mother said this has happened to her a couple of times while she was baking. She also said it made her sick as well. So I guess I am a lot like my mother in that aspect. I honestly hope this never happens to me again, I'm not so sure I can take it :)

  1. I just found your blog today and it makes me smile. This has happened to me a couple of times. I tend to look at it as a lucky omen.

You do realize that the eggs that we eat would never be chickens because they have not been fertilized right? So this egg would have never been a chick or twins chicks. I hope that makes you feel better.

  2. Princess is absolutely right! Double-yolked eggs are no big deal! More bang for your buck, so to speak.
